Calling him a “visionary and charismatic leader,” the Chief Minister remembered Bhandari as the true architect of modern Sikkim whose contributions shaped the future of the State in many ways.
In a statement issued on July 16, CM Tamang said, “On the solemn occasion of the 8th death anniversary of Late Shri Nar Bahadur Bhandari, I pay my deepest respects and heartfelt tribute to one of the most visionary and charismatic leaders in the history of our State.”
Nar Bahadur Bhandari, who served as the Chief Minister for over 15 years, is still remembered for his deep connection with the people and for bringing major reforms in the political, social, and educational fields in Sikkim. His leadership style, grounded in simplicity and people-first policies, won the hearts of many.
“He dedicated his life to the service of Sikkim and its people,” CM Tamang said, adding, “His tenure as Chief Minister marked a transformative era. He worked tirelessly for the promotion of the Nepali language, empowerment of rural people, and strengthening of democratic institutions.”
People across Sikkim, especially the older generation, continue to hold Bhandari in high regard for his strong voice in preserving Sikkim’s identity and for promoting inclusivity and self-reliance. He was often described as a leader who was truly one with the people. Whether in remote villages or busy towns, Bhandari had a way of connecting with everyone, regardless of background or status.
Chief Minister Tamang also emphasised how Bhandari’s legacy remains alive even today. “He was a true people's leader who connected deeply with citizens from all walks of life and championed the causes of inclusivity, identity, and self-reliance. His legacy remains etched in the hearts and minds of the Sikkimese people.”
The day was observed across the state with floral tributes, remembrance gatherings, and quiet reflection on the former leader’s life and achievements. Various organisations, political leaders, and citizens shared their memories and messages of respect, thanking Bhandari for the strong foundation he laid for the future of Sikkim.
