The Citizen Action Party-Sikkim (CAP-S) has strongly opposed Chief Minister PS Golay's proposal to invite UK-based pop sensation Ed Sheeran to perform at the state’s 50th Statehood Day celebration. In a statement released today, CAP-S spokesperson Albert Gurung highlighted the financial burden such an event could impose on the state, given its ongoing economic challenges.

"At a time when the government is struggling to pay its employees on time and fulfill obligations to small and medium contractors, spending ₹26 crore to ₹36 crore on a single performance is highly irresponsible," said Gurung. Ed Sheeran, known for his chart-topping hits and global appeal, charges concert fees that could significantly strain Sikkim’s limited resources.

The party accused the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) government of prioritizing extravagant entertainment over addressing critical governance issues. CAP-S noted that timely salary payments, support for local contractors, and improved healthcare and education should take precedence over hosting international celebrities.

"If Sikkim were prosperous with full employment, quality public services, and no outstanding payments, we would gladly welcome stars like Beyoncé or Taylor Swift. But the current reality demands prudent financial decisions," Gurung said.

CAP-S urged the Chief Minister to fulfill his commitments under the BIPASA scheme, ensure timely payments to employees, and resolve outstanding bills with contractors before embarking on such ambitious plans. The party also questioned the government’s focus, stating that the interests of a few should not overshadow the well-being of the majority.
