Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang attended a key meeting of the High-Level Task Force on Agriculture and Horticulture, organised by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER). The meeting brought together Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, and Cabinet Ministers from across the North East to focus on improving value chains and market linkages in agriculture and horticulture sectors.

The gathering was followed by another important session of the High-Level Task Force on Investment Promotion and Tourism. Both meetings were aimed at creating a clear path for economic growth in the North Eastern states.

Chief Minister Tamang expressed his sincere thanks to all the participants for their active involvement and meaningful contributions. He offered special gratitude to Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia for his deep insights and thoughtful suggestions. Tamang highlighted that Scindia’s understanding of the key issues facing farmers and producers gave much-needed clarity to the ongoing discussions.

The Sikkim CM stressed the need for not just policy changes, but also stronger support from national banks, better infrastructure, wider use of modern technology, and better access to markets. These changes, he said, are essential to uplift rural areas and improve the lives of farmers in the region.

He further added that the Northeast has rich potential in agriculture and horticulture. However, to unlock this potential, there is a need for improved road connectivity, better coordination between states, and greater involvement of private players. According to him, when stakeholders work together with a common goal, many current challenges can be solved.

During the session, leaders discussed practical steps to move forward. Key points included boosting cold storage facilities, supporting farmer cooperatives, and improving transportation links to major markets across the country.

Tamang said that agriculture and horticulture are not just about food production. They are also about sustaining the livelihood of a large part of the population in the Northeast. He added that investing in these sectors means investing in the future of the region.

He called on all stakeholders—governments, financial institutions, private players, and local communities—to come together with a shared vision. Only through joint efforts, he said, can the Northeast achieve sustainable growth in these vital sectors.

The Chief Minister ended on a hopeful note, saying, “With innovation, cooperation, and determination, we can take agriculture and horticulture in our region to new heights.”
