The Ministry of Railways has granted approval for the final location survey of the Melli-Dentam railway line. This project, with an estimated cost of Rs 2.25 crore, is poised to enhance connectivity in the southern and western regions of the state, contributing to economic growth and regional integration.

The final survey, which will be conducted by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), is a crucial step towards bridging a vital infrastructure gap by linking remote areas, including Dentam, near the India-Nepal border at Chiwabhanjyang, with the national railway network. The railway line is envisioned as an extension of the ongoing Sivok-Rangpo project, slated to be operational by 2027.

The proposed Melli-Dentam line, which will span approximately 75 km, will pass through key locations such as Jorethang and Legship, with Melli serving as an important junction for the project. This railway line is expected to integrate Sikkim more closely with India’s national transportation system, ensuring better connectivity for locals and tourists alike.

The project is seen as a game-changer for the region, especially in areas like Gyalshing, where it will drive economic development by facilitating smoother trade, promoting tourism, and creating job opportunities. The final location survey will provide in-depth technical details for the alignment, engineering design, and cost estimations for the line’s construction.
