The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested Puran Bahadur Rai, an accused in the 2010 murder of Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) President Madan Tamang. Rai was apprehended from Bommasandra, Maruthi Nagar, in Bengaluru, Karnataka, after evading authorities for several years.
Madan Tamang was brutally murdered in broad daylight at Clubside, Darjeeling, on May 21, 2010. The case, which shook the region, was handed over to the CBI on January 19, 2011, following notifications from the West Bengal government and the Central Government of India.
According to the CBI, Puran Rai had been evading legal proceedings since 2017 and had relocated from Darjeeling to Bengaluru to avoid arrest.
CBI officials stated that Rai had been charge-sheeted but failed to attend trial proceedings for years. The Chief Judge of the City Sessions Court, Kolkata, had issued a proclamation against him on April 3, 2017. However, Rai did not appear before the court, prompting the issuance of an open-ended warrant on November 20, 2024.
After technical surveillance and intensive efforts, the CBI finally arrested Rai. Officials confirmed that he will be produced before the competent court soon.
Madan Tamang’s murder remains a high-profile case in the Darjeeling hills, with multiple accused persons facing legal proceedings.
