BJP Sikkim State President Shri DR Thapa has criticized the state government for what he called an “unprecedented” and “insensitive” hike in Trade Licence Fees, Shop Rent, Electricity Bills, and Garbage Charges across both urban and rural areas of Sikkim. Speaking at a public awareness programme held at the BJP State Office in Singtam today, Thapa said these sudden increases are placing a heavy financial burden on common citizens, especially at a time when many are already struggling to make ends meet.

Thapa pointed out that these hikes come while the people of Sikkim are still waiting for their delayed payments under the MGNREGA scheme, as well as pending Dairy Incentives and old-age Pensions. “This is not the right time to burden people further,” he said. “Instead of providing relief, the government is pushing people into deeper financial stress.”

He added that the rising cost of living is already a major concern in Sikkim, and such government decisions only make life harder for ordinary families. “These fee hikes are unjust and lack empathy. The government must act with sensitivity and understand the real struggles of the people,” Thapa said.

The BJP leader urged the state government to immediately roll back the increased charges and instead focus on clearing the delayed payments owed to citizens. “Wages under MGNREGA are still pending, and the non-payment of dairy incentives and pensions is worsening the situation. The people need support, not pressure,” he said.

Calling on the Chief Minister to take urgent action, Thapa said, “This is a time for compassion, not collection. The government should prioritize timely disbursal of all pending wages and benefits. Only then can we ensure some level of relief and financial stability for our people.”
