The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Sikkim Pradesh, has expressed strong support for the Central Government’s recent decision to conduct a comprehensive population census with caste-based enumeration. In an official press release issued today, the party described the move as a “landmark decision”.
Calling it a bold and progressive step, BJP Sikkim stated that the inclusion of caste data in the census will empower policymakers with real-time, community-specific insights into the socio-economic conditions of various groups. According to the party, this will help ensure that welfare schemes and reservation benefits reach the truly marginalised and underrepresented sections of society.
Highlighting the significance of the initiative, the party listed several key merits of the caste-based census:
Evidence-Based Policy Making: With accurate caste-wise data, government initiatives can be designed and implemented more effectively, replacing assumptions with facts.
Fairer Reservation Policies: Demographic clarity will allow for a rational reassessment of affirmative action in education, employment, and governance.
Empowerment of Marginalised Communities: Communities that have historically remained on the periphery of the development narrative will gain visibility and voice in national planning.
Transparency in Governance: The availability of caste data to the public will bring greater transparency and accountability to social justice policies.
Relevance for States Like Sikkim: The data will be vital for crafting state-specific policies, especially in culturally diverse and demographically unique regions.
BJP Sikkim Pradesh hailed the decision as a “turning point” in the nation’s journey toward an equitable society.
