The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sikkim has voiced strong opposition to the proposed Ed Sheeran concert, which is planned as part of the state's 50th Statehood Day celebrations. The party argues that this extravagant event diverts attention from the pressing development needs of Sikkim and its citizens, particularly at a time when the state is grappling with severe economic challenges.

In a press release issued today, BJP Sikkim criticized the state government for prioritizing public entertainment over essential needs. Despite Sikkim's 50 years since its merger, the state continues to struggle under a substantial debt burden, unable to meet basic financial obligations such as paying salaries, contractor dues, and scholarships. These financial difficulties are compounded by inadequate healthcare and education facilities, which the BJP claims should be the primary focus of the state government.

"The government is more concerned with a grand spectacle than addressing the real issues faced by the people of Sikkim," the statement read. "While celebrating 50 years of statehood, the government should take a hard look at its progress and the gaps in crucial sectors like infrastructure, healthcare, and education."

The BJP also pointed out the state's unemployment crisis, with many young people unable to find work due to insufficient infrastructure and job opportunities. The lack of basic facilities such as roads, hospitals, and schools is seen as a major obstacle to Sikkim’s development. The party has called for the government to stop the leakages in revenue and focus on improving essential services rather than indulging in costly performances.

The release said that the celebration of Statehood Day should be a time of reflection and strategic planning for the future. "Instead of focusing on the 'Shape of You' by Ed Sheeran, the government should focus on the shape and scenario of Sikkim and take timely measures to elevate our statehood," the statement read.
