The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sikkim State Unit has expressed strong disapproval and condemnation over an error made by the popular national daily, The Hindu, in its edition of May 13, 2025. The newspaper published a map of India that shockingly omitted the state of Sikkim, a territory that is an integral part of the Indian Union. This oversight has sparked outrage among the people of Sikkim, and the BJP has demanded an apology and immediate rectification of the mistake.
The omission of Sikkim from the map is being viewed not just as a minor error but as a direct affront to the people of the state. According to the BJP Sikkim, this act undermines the state's sovereignty and violates the territorial integrity of India. Sikkim, which joined the Indian Union in 1975, is not only a proud state but is also a part of India’s constitutional fabric, protected under Article 371F. This article ensures Sikkim’s distinct identity and governance structure, reinforcing its integral role in the country.
The BJP State Unit has called for the editorial board of The Hindu to issue an immediate and unconditional public apology for this blunder. The party has also requested that the newspaper rectify the published material at the earliest and release an updated version of the map that includes Sikkim in its rightful place. In addition, BJP Sikkim has urged the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to take action against The Hindu for this careless mistake.
The Sikkim BJP has also stressed that such an oversight reflects a disregard for the sentiments of the people of Sikkim and their rightful place within India. The party reminded The Hindu and other media outlets of their duty to uphold national unity, safeguard constitutional values, and practice responsible journalism. “It is crucial for media houses to ensure accurate and respectful representation, especially when it comes to matters that concern national pride and integrity,” said the statement issued by BJP Sikkim.
The omission of Sikkim, especially at a time when the state is preparing to celebrate its 50 years of statehood on May 16, 2025, has caused deep resentment among the residents of the state. The BJP further said that Sikkim will not tolerate being overlooked or disrespected in any way. “We will continue to stand firm in defense of the state’s honor and will resist any attempt—intentional or accidental—to diminish its place in the Indian Union,” the statement read.
