A scuffle erupted on the Parliament premises on Thursday, following protests over Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks on Dr. BR Ambedkar. The incident left two BJP MPs seriously injured, and both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress have filed complaints with the police. According to sources, the cases involving the Parliament clash will now be handed over to the Crime Branch for further investigation.
The controversy began earlier in the week when Shah made remarks about Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha, which sparked widespread outrage. On Thursday, MPs from the INDIA bloc staged protests against the comments, leading to tensions that escalated into the scuffle outside Makar Dwar. In the aftermath, BJP filed a police complaint against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of incitement, assault, and even an attempt to murder.
BJP MP Anurag Thakur stated, "We have filed a complaint with Delhi Police against Rahul Gandhi for assault and incitement. We have mentioned in detail the incident that happened today outside Makar Dwar, where NDA MPs were protesting peacefully." The complaint includes charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including attempt to murder (Section 109) and voluntary causing grievous hurt (Section 117).
The Delhi Police registered an FIR based on BJP's complaint, which includes charges of voluntary causing grievous hurt, endangering life, criminal intimidation, and use of criminal force. The case has been filed at the Parliament Street police station.
Meanwhile, Congress also filed a complaint alleging "misbehavior" with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge on the Parliament premises. Congress leader Pramod Tiwari condemned the BJP's actions, claiming that the attack on Ambedkar was part of a broader conspiracy. "The way a Dalit leader was abused the day before yesterday and today he was pushed—this is all a conspiracy," he said.
In response to BJP's accusations, Congress MP Jebi Mathur dismissed the allegations against Rahul Gandhi, calling them a part of a political strategy. Rahul Gandhi's sister, Priyanka Gandhi, also criticized the BJP, accusing them of desperation in their handling of the situation. She called the FIRs against her brother "a sign of the BJP's desperation."
Jairam Ramesh of Congress further alleged that the scuffle was a "completely planned" distraction. He claimed the BJP was attempting to deflect attention from Shah's remarks on Ambedkar. "The Home Minister insulted BR Ambedkar, and we demanded an apology. They planned all this to distract the issue. This FIR is not against Rahul Gandhi; it is against BR Ambedkar," Ramesh said.
