Students studying in ICSE schools across Sikkim can now choose Bhutia as their second language. The announcement was made today, February 13, 2025, by Bhutia Kayrab Yargay Tshogpa (BKYT), the Bhutia Literary Association, during a press conference addressed by Minister Sonam Lama.

BKYT, which has been working tirelessly to preserve and promote the Bhutia language, expressed gratitude to the Sikkim government and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang for their support. The association had long advocated for the inclusion of the Bhutia language in private schools, a goal that faced delays due to previous lack of approval from the Centre. With the combined efforts of the state government, central authorities, and parent support, the language has now been officially incorporated into the curriculum.

Minister Sonam Lama praised the SKM government for its inclusive leadership. “Under Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang’s vision, all communities in Sikkim have been treated equally. This approval is another example of ensuring equality and preserving cultural heritage,” he said.

The Bhutia community welcomed the decision stating the importance of preserving their language and culture for future generations.
