The Bhutan Women’s Archery Team emerged victorious in the exhibition match of the 23rd Chief Minister’s Compound Archery Gold Cup, held today at the Karthok Archery Field in Pakyong. The event, which showcased the emerging talent in archery, brought together archers, dignitaries, and spectators to celebrate women’s involvement in the sport.
The exhibition match saw the Bhutan Women's Archery Team demonstrate exceptional precision and coordination, securing a well-deserved win against the Pakyong District Archery Association. Their victory not only highlighted their prowess but also marked a significant moment in promoting women’s empowerment in sports, breaking traditional norms and emphasizing strength and determination.
The event was graced by Deputy Speaker Raj Kumari Thapa, who served as the Chief Guest, alongside MLA cum Advisor for Rural Development Department, Kala Rai, who was the Guest of Honour, and Deputy Mayor of Gangtok Municipal Corporation, Tshering Palden Bhutia, as the Special Guest. Other notable figures in attendance included Pamin Lepcha, MLA and Advisor, as well as President of the Organizing Committee; Laden Lhamu Bhutia, Zilla Adhakshya; and Prabha Pradhan, Zilla Upadhakshya.
As a token of appreciation for their remarkable performance, the winning team was awarded a cash prize of Rs 50,000, while the runners-up received Rs 30,000. The event was not just about competition but also about celebrating the spirit of community and traditional sportsmanship.
In a delightful diversion, dignitaries and guests participated in kite flying, an age-old tradition, by releasing creatively designed kites into the sky. They also visited a traditional archery stall, where they got the chance to engage with antique bows and arrows, offering a glimpse into the heritage of archery.
The event also included a series of local competitions, including the ongoing Hatey Kar darts competition, where teams competed fiercely to reach the quarterfinals. In today’s matches, Gonam Pheba defeated Denzong Boys 60-40, Yawa Boys triumphed over Renzongmoo with a score of 60-20, and Kabuthang United edged out Aku Phing Phing 32-28.
The 23rd Chief Minister’s Compound Archery Gold Cup, organized by the Pakyong District Archery Association in collaboration with the District Administration Centre (DAC), Pakyong, aims to promote the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and the Nasha Mukt Sikkim Abhiyan. As the tournament progresses, it has successfully reached the semi-finals, with the first semi-final scheduled for tomorrow, April 23.
