In a time of deep pain and fear, when a family had almost lost all hope, a miracle took place; one made possible by quick government support, human kindness, and timely medical care.
This is the story of little Sanvi Rai, a 7-month-old baby girl from Rangpo in Sikkim, who was born with a serious heart condition. Since her birth, her parents noticed something was not right. She often had trouble breathing and showed signs of weakness. As her condition worsened, the family rushed her to STNM Hospital in Gangtok. There, doctors gave the worried parents the most difficult news they had heard yet.
Sanvi needed to be shifted immediately to Kolkata for a life-saving heart surgery.
For her father, Suraj Rai, and the rest of the family, it was a moment of heartbreak. The doctors had done their part, but now the treatment required travel, hospital admission, and surgery in a city far away. The cost was beyond what the family could afford. In their words, “We felt helpless. We didn’t know what to do next.”
But then, something unexpected happened.
Upon hearing about the baby’s critical condition, Sikkim Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) and West Pendam MLA Shri LB Das quickly stepped in. With no delay, they arranged emergency air travel for the child and her parents. More importantly, they made sure that the government would cover all costs of the treatment, including the surgery, medicines, hospital stay, and recovery.
Speaking to the media after their return, the parents could not hold back their emotions.
“Our daughter had a heart problem since birth. We were facing very hard times. At that time, Golay Sir and Elvida Sir from our area helped us like family. Because of them, the operation was done successfully. Today our daughter is healthy. For us, they are like gods,” said the parents with tears in their eyes.
They added, “Our daughter was only 7 months old, but she fought through it. We don’t have enough words to thank the people who helped us. This was something we never expected. We will always be thankful to the Chief Minister and our area’s MLA for standing by us.”
Today, Sanvi is back home. Her health is improving every day. She can now smile, play, and be in the loving arms of her mother. Her parents say that each smile of their daughter is a blessing and a reminder of the kindness they received during the most difficult time in their lives.
