Amar Subba, known with affection as the “Marathon Man of Sikkim,” brought glory to the region once again by securing second place in the world-famous Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon 2025. The event, held at the Everest Base Camp, is regarded as one of the highest and most difficult races on Earth.
Amar completed the 21-kilometre half marathon in 2 hours, 42 minutes, and 2 seconds, earning him the second spot among a field of elite runners from across the globe. The race, which starts at the Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 5,364 metres (17,598 feet), runs through steep, icy trails, narrow paths, and rocky terrains. With oxygen levels nearly half of what is available at sea level, the marathon is known to test even the fittest athletes to their limits.
Despite the extreme conditions, Amar pushed through with strength and determination, making not only his home state of Sikkim but the entire country proud. What made his achievement even more touching was his dedication of the win to the people of Sikkim. Speaking after the race, Amar said he was offering the victory as a tribute to Sikkim’s 50 years of statehood — a symbolic gesture to mark the state’s Golden Jubilee.
In a proud moment, Amar Subba also served as the Goodwill Ambassador of the marathon this year. His participation was not just about competition but also about representing the values and spirit of Sikkim on a global stage.
Bikram Thapa, Coordinator of Project Life, said, “Amar Sir has once again made us proud. His win at this international event is not just a personal victory but a message to youth everywhere. He has always inspired the younger generation of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Sikkim to adopt fitness and discipline through long-distance running. His life is an example of what can be achieved with focus and hard work.”
