A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Shigatse in Tibet, China, at 6:35 AM today, causing tremors that were felt across South Asia, including Sikkim, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and China.
In Sikkim, residents experienced mild to moderate shaking, prompting concerns but no immediate reports of damage or casualties. “The tremors were sudden and noticeable. Many of us stepped outside for safety,” said a resident in Gangtok.
The earthquake’s epicenter was in a seismically active Himalayan region, making tremors a frequent occurrence.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the quake, assuring that there is no immediate threat but advised preparedness. Emergency teams in Sikkim and neighboring states are on standby.
