19-year-old technician found dead in Jorethang, probe underway

A 19-year-old youth from West Bengal was found dead in a suspected case of suicide at his rented room in Gairigaon, Jorethang, on Wednesday evening. The deceased, identified as Suman Mitra, son of Sanjoy Mitra and a resident of Khawachand Para in Jalpaiguri, was reportedly working as a helper technician under NHPC Rohtak for the installation of air conditioning systems in the area.
According to a written FIR lodged by the house owner, Devi Prasad Adhikari, the incident came to light around 4:16 PM. Upon receiving the information, police registered a case and initiated an investigation. A police team led by ASI Sanjay Rai, along with local residents, rushed to the spot after being alerted by the victim’s cousin, Susan, who had been staying with him.
Authorities said that Suman had locked himself in the room and failed to respond to repeated calls. Fearing something amiss, Susan approached Jorethang Police Station. The police team broke open the locked door and found Suman hanging from the ceiling fan using an “Assamese Gamcha”.
An inquest was conducted by the SDM, Jorethang, in the presence of two independent witnesses. The body was later sent to Namchi District Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
